A federal mediator will attempt to get union and management back to the bargaining table to end a walkout by culinary union workers that has virtually stopped work at the classified Nevada Test Site and Tonopah Test Range, a union official said. More than 90% of the trade union work force at the Mercury, Nev., test site and test range has honored the Culinary Union picket lines during each day of the strike that began Tuesday, officials said. In addition to nuclear testing at the site, which is about the size of Rhode Island, experiments on the so-called “Star Wars” defense system have been conducted there.
