Judiciary Committee Hearings on Judge Robert Bork

Apparently Times reporters David Lauter and David Savage expect that people deprived of their rights by one of Bork’s decisions will be reassured by his friendly laugh and rotund build (Part I, Sept. 13).
Likewise, Nicaraguan peasants maimed by Reagan’s contras must be comforted by the Reagan smile and jokes.
Since Bork’s ambitions include reversing decades of major Supreme Court decisions, ending the right to privacy and crippling the First Amendment right to free speech, I can’t imagine any sillier criteria to apply in making such a fateful decision as placing him on the Supreme Court.
