Orange County College Roundup : UCI, Three Others Advance in Water Polo Tournament

Second-ranked UC Irvine moved into the final four of the 21st annual Irvine water polo tournament by splitting its two games Saturday.

Tony Bell scored four goals as UCI defeated UC Santa Barbara, 9-3. But the Anteaters lost to top-ranked California, 7-5, and dropped to 3-1 in the tournament. UCI led, 4-3, at the half, but Kirk Everist led the Bears back by scoring three goals. Mike Halphide and Tony Bell each scored twice for the Anteaters.

In today’s final round, UCI plays Stanford at 9:50 a.m. Stanford, two-time defending NCAA champion, is 5-0 in the tournament, which it won last year. Also advancing to the finals are California and Cal State Long Beach, both 3-1.

In other water polo action:

UC Riverside 14, Chapman 7; California Maritime 15, Chapman 6----Freshman Brian Cummings scored three goals against Riverside and two against California Maritime, but Chapman dropped both games on the first day of the Whittier Invitational. The Panthers are 0-3.

In cross-country:

UC Irvine finished second in the men’s and fourth in the women’s division of the UC Riverside Invitational. UCI men scored 42 points, eight behind San Diego State. Pete Vicenio was the highest placing Anteater, finishing sixth in 24:29. In the women’s division, sophomore Buffy Rabbitt placed second in 18:02.

In the Chapman Invitational, Chapman senior Carla Figueroa finished second, running 3.1 miles in 19:58, helping Chapman to a sixth-place finish.

In women’s volleyball:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo def. Cal State Fullerton, 15-10, 15-9, 15-5--The Titans led, 10-9, in the first game of the match at Titan Gym, but couldn’t keep pace with Cal Poly SLO, which ran off six straight points in the first set. Sophomore Susan Herman led Fullerton with 13 kills. The Titans are 0-2 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., 7-6 overall.

UC Irvine def. University of San Diego, 15-8, 15-5, 15-4; UCI def. University of Toledo, 15-12, 15-7, 15-0--Irvine made the most of its homecourt advantage at the Anteater Invitational, easily defeating the only other teams in the tournament. UCI’s Kris Roberts had 15 kills, a .414 hitting percentage, 7 solo blocks and 8 block assists, and setter Ann Warmus had 57 assists. The Anteaters are 4-4.

Rhode Island def. Chapman, 14-16, 12-15, 15-4, 15-12, 15-13; Memphis State def. Chapman, 15-11, 10-15, 15-10, 15-9--Chapman lost to Rhode Island in the second round of the consolation bracket of the BYU Invitational at Provo, Utah, and dropped the contest for 15th place to Memphis State. The Panthers drop to 0-6.
