Bausley, Valley Overrun College of Desert, 56-16

Valley College coasted to a 56-16 win over College of the Desert after building a 36-16 halftime lead in the Southern California Conference opener for both teams Saturday night at Valley College.

Valley (2-0) set a school record for total offense with 679 yards. Monarch tailback Dondre Bausley sliced through the Roadrunners’ defense for 183 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 carries.

Quarterback Barry Hanks celebrated his 21st birthday by completing 13 of 15 passes for 251 yards and 3 touchdowns--all of them to wide receiver James Reaves.

Desert (1-1), the defending conference champion, was led by quarterback Eric Eastman, who completed 11 of 20 for 129 yards.

It was an offense-dominated game from the start as the teams combined for 52 points in the first half.

Bausley started the barrage for the Monarchs with the first of his two first-half touchdowns--a 53-yard run off left tackle on the team’s first possession.

Desert didn’t waste much time answering as Speedy Hylton took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown.

On Valley’s next possession, quarterback Hanks lofted a pass 48 yards to wide receiver Reaves, who caught the ball without breaking stride and dashed the last 25 yards to complete a 73-yard scoring play. Hanks and Reaves connected again later in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass to cap a nine-play, 66-yard drive. Hanks finished the half 8 of 9 for 132 yards.

Bausley’s second touchdown came in the second quarter after a Desert field goal. This time, the sophomore ran around right end, bounced off a defender and dashed 53 yards for the score.

Adrian Davis completed Valley’s first-half scoring when he caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Todd Studer.

Running back Merten Harris brought Desert to within 36-16, on a 34-yard touchdown run.
