Director Franklin Schaffner, Oscar-winner in 1970 for “Patton,” has been elected the 15th president of the Directors Guild of America. Schaffner replaces Gilbert Cates, who resigned. Cates started his third two-year term in July, accepting the job only because he wanted to see the guild smoothly through the then-threatened strike, a DGA spokesman said. Schaffner will serve the remainder of Cates’ term, which expires in July, 1989.
