Pope John Paul’s Visit to L.A.
Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates should be proud of his “boys in blue” for their appearance, helpfulness and conduct during the papal parade. I saw several police officers courteously giving directions and answering questions to people unfamiliar with the downtown area. I also know their day began early and continued late into that evening. It was comforting to know that the caravans of police in the procession were there as a safety measure for both the Pope and the public. It was a most professional and organized effort put forth by the Los Angeles Police Department.
