Deukmejian Signs Tax Rebate

SACRAMENTO — Gov. George Deukmejian today signed a tax rebate bill into law that will give individual taxpayers up to $118 and couples up to $236 by Christmas.
The Republican governor, who held a special signing ceremony at his Capitol offices, said the rebate is required by a voter-approved 1979 constitutional spending limit. The cutoff, the so-called Gann limit, ties government spending to increases in inflation and population, and requires extra state revenues to be refunded to taxpayers within two years.
