Bassel Assad, son of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, won a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games at Latakia, Syria.
The 25-year-old Assad, a colonel in the military, won the individual Grand Prix equestrian event on Appurcut Boy.
In track and field, Said Aouita of Morocco won the 1,500 in 3 minutes 39.47 seconds, 10 seconds off his world record.
