‘Bypassing Peace’ in Nicaragua

In response to Charles Krauthammer’s column (Op-Ed Page, Sept. 14), his anti-Communist paranoia reeks all the way through.
The facts are that the support of the Soviet Union via Cuba is what counts. And there it appears that Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev is much more interested in keeping his resources focused on the improvement of his home economy that needs reforming rather than expending his resources in a far-away experiment in Nicaragua that tends to get more expensive as time goes on.
It is my understanding that he has made overtures to Washington indicating his willingness to pull out of Central America in return for Washington’s willingness to cut support for the resistance in Afghanistan.
Without that support Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega has no choice but to come to terms with us. This is the great chance for the Administration to solve two problems at once, besides making peace in Central America possible. I hope the Reagan Administration takes advantage of this opportunity.
