Downtown Hotel on Del Mar Ballot
Del Mar voters today will decide the fate of a proposed three-story, 125-room hotel planned for the northwest corner of Camino Del Mar and 15th Street in the heart of the seaside community’s tiny downtown.
The proposed hotel would be on the site of the old Hotel Del Mar, a civic institution for 60 years before it was torn down in 1969. The 5.2-acre site has remained vacant since then.
Boosters say the hotel proposal will provide $2 million to the city for a new library and fire station, but opponents warn about tides of tourists swamping Del Mar.
Polls for the special election open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
