The U.S. State Department expressed disappointment at “signs of renewed political repression” in Paraguay, ruled by military strongman Alfredo Stroessner for 33 years. A statement read to reporters by a department spokesman noted recurring arrests of prominent political figures, indefinite suspension of the newspaper El Pueblo and re-emergence of “officially endorsed vigilantes to suppress legitimate political dissent.” Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams delivered the complaint to Paraguayan Foreign Minister Carlos Augusto Salvidar, the spokesman said.
