Afghan guerrillas have pushed closer to Kabul than ever before, Western diplomatic sources said. The sources also reported a rocket attack on the Soviet Embassy, as well as intense fighting between the guerrillas and combined Soviet-Afghan forces west of Kabul. A guerrilla leader credits more sophisticated weaponry for the stepped-up attacks. Brig. Gen. Rahmatullah Safi of the National Islamic Front of Afghanistan declined to name the country supplying the weaponry, but U.S. congressional and Administration sources say the war has changed since last year’s delivery of U.S. Stinger anti-aircraft missiles.
