Rep. Bill Boner (D-Tenn.) defeated millionaire businessman Phil Bredesen in the runoff for mayor of Nashville, Tenn. With nearly 100% of the vote counted, unofficial results showed Boner had 75,017 votes or 53%, and Bredesen trailed at 47% with 66,999 votes. In Boston, with two thirds of the vote counted in the nonpartisan mayoral primary, first-term incumbent Raymond L. Flynn and former City Councilor Joseph Tierney advanced to the general election in November.
