Paper Seeks Probe of Publisher’s Death

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence Journal Co. has asked for an investigation of the death of Michael P. Metcalf, the company’s chief executive officer and publisher of the Providence Journal-Bulletin.
The company on Monday asked the Bristol County, Mass., district attorney’s office to look into the “unusual nature” of the apparent bicycle accident that led to Metcalf’s death, the Providence Journal reported Tuesday.
The request was made hours before an autopsy on Metcalf, completed late Monday night at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Mass., showed the publisher’s death was “nothing startling,” according to Dr. David Shulman, Bristol County medical examiner.
Metcalf, 54, publisher of the Providence Journal-Bulletin and chairman of the Journal Co., died Sunday night, a week after he suffered serious head injuries in a freak bicycle accident near his Westport, Mass., summer home.
Authorities have no witnesses to the incident and do not believe foul play was involved.
