Mark E. Simmons has been named president and chief executive officer of Marine National Bank, replacing Thomas R. Timmons. Simmons had been executive vice president of the Santa Ana-based bank.
He said he plans to increase Marine National’s size by focusing more on successful small businesses and professionals. The bank, averaging about $58 million in assets, had a loss of $370,000 last year, according to regulatory records. Simmons said the bank now is profitable, but he did not release income figures.
The 41-year-old banker, an Irvine resident, had been executive vice president at Orange City Bank, now called American Merchant Bank, and was senior vice president on the management team that tried to rescue Heritage Bank in Anaheim before regulators closed it in March, 1984.
Larry T. Smith, Marine National’s chairman, said Timmons, also 41 and an Irvine resident, resigned to complete his plan of building his own business as an independent turn-around specialist for financial institutions. Timmons, who was hired in August, 1986, could not be reached for comment.
