Tentative settlements were announced in school strikes in Edmonds, Wash.; Cassopolis, Mich., and Plainfield, N.J., but a long strike by 28,000 Chicago teachers was predicted in the nation’s biggest walkout. Teachers in Little Rock, Ark., voted to strike today if there is no settlement. Chicago’s 430,000 public school students could lose part or all of their spring break to make up lost days, officials said, as a spokesman predicted that the walkout would stretch into a fourth week. About 300 parents and children demonstrated outside school board headquarters.
