The State : Lockheed to Settle Suit

Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. has agreed to pay $1.3 million in settlement of a suit brought by the state over illegally stored hazardous wastes at its Sunnyvale facility, it was announced in Sacramento. The suit, filed in October, 1986, in San Francisco Superior Court, charged Lockheed with failing to label acids, solvents, paints, electroplating solution and other hazardous wastes and with not having a permit to operate a hazardous-waste site. “This $1.3-million settlement is a major victory for the state,” said Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp, whose environmental section filed the suit on behalf of the Department of Health Services. Van de Kamp said Lockheed has made excellent progress this year in modernizing its Sunnyvale hazardous-waste operations.
