NFL Calls Off 14 Games as Talks in Strike Are Stalled

The National Football League called off 14 games scheduled for Sunday and Monday as talks in the three-day NFL strike stalled.
Commissioner Pete Rozelle said he is unsure if those games will be made up or played at a later date. The league plans to resume play Oct. 4, using non-union players.
In Philadelphia, where the talks are taking place, two key management negotiators went home after no progress was made. Tex Schramm of the Dallas Cowboys and Dan Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers said both sides are far apart on the key issue of free agency. Jack Donlan, representing the owners, and Gene Upshaw, from the players union, continued to bargain on other issues.
