Penn State’s 1986 Schedule Defended

Thomas Bonk obviously established a story line and then wrote the story (“Scheduling a Fiesta,” Sept. 2) to suit it. Why do I say that? Because he conveniently omitted one important fact: Going into 1986, Penn State had played the toughest Division I-A schedule in the 1980s, according to the NCAA rating system. The Nittany Lions didn’t play a particularly tough schedule in 1986, but they did what they had to do.
Where has Bonk been while Penn State has been beating Ohio State in Columbus, Nebraska in Lincoln, Texas A&M; in College Station and Notre Dame in South Bend? And will he be covering his eyes and ears when Penn State beats USC in Los Angeles?
