‘BEIRUT’

In her article on Rob Reiner and my father (“Reiner Takes a ‘Bride,’ ” Sept. 20), Ellen Farley wrote that “Beirut” is a play about AIDS.
This is an incorrect statement. It is a play about love, passion, fear, commitment and quarantine. We refer to the disease in the play as the plague; and, although it has some similarities to AIDS, there are significant differences between the plague in “Beirut” and what we know to be true about AIDS.
Referring to “Beirut” as a play about AIDS is inaccurate and can be detrimental to an audience’s perception of the play.
