First President Was Childless

Re your article “No Wonder Irvine Man Looks Like Washington” (Sept. 18):

I would imagine that my letter will be only one of a large number telling George Willis Tate of Irvine that he is mistaken if he means he is a direct descendant of George Washington.

Tate might be of the same lineage as our first President, but he is not in a direct line. George Washington, as every historian worth his salt knows, had no children. Whoever advised Tate that he was a descendant of George Washington was in error.
