A court in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, condemned to death seven Islamic fundamentalists who were among 90 charged with attempting to overthrow the government of President Habib Bourguiba. One of the doomed defendants was convicted of making the bombs that exploded Aug. 2 at four Tunisian resorts that injured a dozen European tourists. Two defendants were sentenced to life in prison, including Rachid Ghannouchi, head of the Islamic Tendency Movement, an opposition group that the government claims has ties to Iran’s fundamentalist Shia Muslim regime. The court gave 67 defendants prison sentences ranging from two years to life, and 14 were acquitted.
