Running back Tom Walker swept 16 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give Newport Harbor High School a 12-7 nonleague football victory Saturday at Huntington Beach.
Walker’s score, which came with two minutes gone in the period, occurred three plays after quarterback Kirk Summers threw a 46-yard pass to Tyler Parks to the Huntington Beach 30.
Huntington Beach (2-1), which held a 7-6 lead before Walker’s score, had the ball on the Newport Harbor 34 with two minutes left in the game. But Newport Harbor defensive lineman Dave Hathcock recovered a fumble by Huntington Beach running back Jason McGehee at the 34 to stop the Oiler threat.
Newport Harbor (3-0), which trailed, 7-0, after a five-yard touchdown run by Doobie Escobedo with 3:47 left in the first period, came within one point two minutes later on a 26-yard scoring run by Scott Morency.
Sonora 17, Don Lugo 12--Sonora Scott Schenk rambled for 128 yards on 16 carries as Sonora came from behind to defeat Don Lugo. The Raiders scored their go-ahead touchdown when Jeff Reedes caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Billy Robb.
