Moorpark Defense Still Stingy, 28-12

Moorpark College, ranked fourth in the state in defense, stifled Long Beach City College, 28-12, in a nonconference game at Long Beach on Saturday night.

Moorpark (3-0) gave up its first touchdown of the season in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter but not before the Raiders had set a school record of 11 consecutive scoreless quarters.

Long Beach (2-1), which had scored 71 points its first two games, broke the string when quarterback Rick Wildt completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Eric Morgan. The Vikings scored again in the last two minutes on Wildt’s 12-yard pass to Ed Robinson.

Moorpark intercepted three Long Beach passes in the first half and two were returned for touchdowns as the Raiders took a 19-0 lead.

Daniel Eastman’s 24-yard field goal in the third period put Moorpark ahead, 22-0. Quarterback Dan Nagelmann came back to hit Frank Madrid on a 58-yard touchdown pass to open the fourth quarter.

Defensive back Jeff White picked off a Paul Fernandez pass and returned it 61 yards for Moorpark’s second touchdown of the first half. Fernandez had replaced Wildt, who was intercepted twice by Moorpark linebacker Miller Aupiu.

A few minutes after a bad center snap sailed over the head of punter Andre Vicario and through the end zone for a safety, Daniel Eastman’s 38-yard field goal put the Raiders ahead, 5-0. Moorpark moved into scoring position with help from a roughing-the-quarterback penalty that advanced the Raiders from the Long Beach 28-yard line to the 14.

Running back Kenny Durr burst into the end zone on the first play after the penalty, but the touchdown was nullified by a holding call and the Raiders settled for the field goal.
