The Agriculture Department said it will make about $3 billion in final subsidy payments for last year’s corn and grain sorghum, raising total payments for those crops to nearly $7 billion, an official said. The subsidies will compensate farmers for reductions in prices to make U.S. crops competitive abroad. The final payments are 48 cents a bushel for corn and 46 cents a bushel for grain sorghum. The payments will be mailed in early October.
