14 Cranes at Wildlife Center Die of Disease

WASHINGTON — An unknown disease has killed 14 cranes, including three endangered whooping cranes, at the government’s Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, Md., the Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday.
More than 100 cranes of various kinds have been sickened since Sept. 9, spokeswoman Megan Durham said. Seven whooping cranes died at Patuxent in 1984 from eastern equine encephalitis, but researchers do not believe the current episode involves encephalitis, she said.
