Injury Sidelines City Gymnastics Champion

Shawn Adamek of Monroe High suffered a broken left forearm before a meet Thursday and will be unable to defend his City Section individual gymnastics title this season. The Monroe senior underwent surgery Friday and will be lost for the season.
Adamek sustained the injury when his left hand became entangled during a warm-up maneuver on the high bar before a meet against University, according to Monroe Coach Les Sasvary.
“His body moved and his hand didn’t,” Sasvary said. “He was hanging there and it took seven of us to get him off the bar. It was terrible, tragic.”
Adamek became the only junior in City history to sweep all seven events when he led Monroe to last year’s title. Adamek had planned to accept a scholarship at Stanford but his athletic future is in doubt, Sasvary said.
Peter De La Cerda competed in a track meet for Granada Hills High on Friday after being given clearance by the Los Angeles Unified School District last week.
De La Cerda, who finished fifth for Alemany in the Southern Section 3-A Division cross-country championships in 1988, transferred to Granada Hills earlier this month.
De La Cerda attended Alemany as a freshman and sophomore but transferred to Hart for his junior year. He then returned to Alemany in the fall for his senior cross-country season.
De La Cerda placed second in the 880-yard run and two mile in a meet against Cleveland on Friday.
