Prep Roundup : Akau Pitches One-Hitter as Buena Park Defeats Los Amigos in Softball

Shannon Akau pitched a one-hitter as Buena Park High School defeated Los Amigos, 10-1, Friday in a 4-A division consolation pool game of the Canyon softball tournament at Peralta Park in Anaheim.
Akau (3-1) allowed an unearned run in the second inning. Kari Escobedo paced the Coyotes’ with two triples and three RBIs.
In other 4-A division consolation pool games:
Millikan 4, El Modena 1--Michelle Shanks (1-0) pitched a three-hitter, striking out 14 for Millikan at Peralta Park.
Garden Grove 2, Woodbridge 1--Michelle Cash singled home Rachael Cooper in the top of the seventh for Garden Grove (9-5) at Peralta Park. Stephanie Smith pitched a five-hitter, striking out six, for the victory.
Buena Park 3, Villa Park 2 (9 innings)--Villa Park’s Robyn Kerfoot hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Buena Park (6-1) scored twice in the top of the ninth playing with an international tiebreaker rule, where each team starts with a runner on second base. The winning run was scored by pitcher Christina Urban on a single by Kari Escobedo. Villa Park is 6-10.
In 5-A division consolation pool games:
Mater Dei 1, St. Paul 0--Terri Kobata (4-1) pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine for Mater Dei (7-2-1) at Peralta Park.
Los Alamitos 3, Westminster 2--Shannon Skoglund (5-5) allowed eight hits and struck out four for Los Alamitos (5-5) at Peralta Park.
Los Alamitos 4, Loara 2--Skoglund pitched a four-hitter.
In Sea View league softball:
Newport Harbor 6, Estancia 3--Jenny Ryan had one hit, one RBI and scored three runs for Newport Harbor (3-3, 2-1) at Estancia. Ryan (1-0) also was the winning pitcher with two strikeouts in seven innings.
Tustin 3, University 1--Shannon Ellis (2-5) pitched her first no-hitter this season with 14 strikeouts for Tustin (3-0). University is 1-2.
In nonleague softball:
Mission Viejo 3, Huntington Beach 2--Center fielder Amy Bond threw out the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory for Mission Viejo (8-5).
In Sunset League badminton:
Marina 10, Ocean View 7--No. 1 boys singles Nappy Lam of Marina (1-1) got his second league victory in as many outings.
In Orange league golf:
Valencia 200, Brea-Olinda 208--The Tigers (5-0, 1-0) won their 42nd consecutive dual match with the victory at Alta Vista Country Club.
In nonleague golf:
Corona del Mar 194, Huntington Beach 202--John Walker shot par 36 for Corona del Mar (7-0) at SeaCliff Country Club.
In nonleague girls’ swimming:
Edison 97, Estancia 58--Edison’s 200-yard medley relay team of Christy Daniher, Jennifer Andrews, Katie Egan, Aimee Apgar, swam a Southern Section qualifying time of 2 minutes 2.35 seconds.
In Orange League tennis:
Brea-Olinda 10, Anaheim 8--Eric Mekkelson and Tom Cornwell swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, as Brea (2-3) won seven doubles sets at home. Neil Vo swept singles for Anaheim (1-5, 1-4).
Valencia 13, Savanna 5--Paul Rygalski swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for Valencia (5-3, 4-0) at Savanna.
Western 16, Magnolia 2--No. 1 singles Ed Peregrino swept his sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for Western (8-2, 4-1) at Magnolia.
In Sea View League tennis:
Corona del Mar 16, Saddleback 2--Sophomore Ken Alston shut out three opponents, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and freshman David Bain won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles for the Sea Kings (8-3, 3-0) at Saddleback.
In South Coast League tennis:
El Toro 16, Irvine 2--Chris Brown and Brian Delbenes swept their singles sets for the Chargers (11-1, 1-0) at El Toro.
In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:
Garden Grove 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Joe Squyres had 16 kills and seven blocks as Garden Grove (5-3, 4-0) swept, 15-12, 15-7, 15-5, at Garden Grove.
La Quinta 3, Santiago 0--Wes Kollar had six kills as the Aztecs (3-3, 3-0) swept, 15-1, 15-10, 15-5, at Santiago
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 0--Jake Reich had 12 kills as the Artists (8-0, 4-0) swept, 15-3, 15-2, 15-5, at Laguna Beach.
In nonleague volleyball:
Newport Harbor 3, Dana Hills 2--Chris Lee had 25 kills as Newport Harbor (2-2) rallied to win, 3-15, 14-16, 15-13, 16-14, 15-10, at Dana Hills.
