Is Tom Hanks warming up for “Bonfire of the Vanities”?

Sources close to the Guber-Peters production of Tom Wolfe’s best-selling acerbic social satire tell us that serious discussions are under way. If a deal can be concluded, Hanks will be cast in the central role of Sherman McCoy, a Wall Street hotshot inadvertently involved in a hit-and-run accident that leaves a black youth dead. When the incident mushrooms into an incendiary political situation, McCoy’s idyllic life turns into a nightmare.

Brian De Palma is set to direct Michael Cristofer’sadaptation in late 1989 for release by Warner Bros. A publicist for the actor would only say that no contracts have been signed.
