A North Hollywood man was fatally shot after he tried to follow a group of thieves he had surprised while they were attempting to steal a pickup truck, Los Angeles police said today.
Darris Garvin, 37, died at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank at 12:40 a.m. today, about 2 1/2 hours after he was shot at the intersection of Troost Avenue and Burbank Boulevard. No arrests have been made in the killing.
At about 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Garvin apparently surprised three or four intruders who were in the garage of his apartment complex in the 5600 block of Colfax Avenue attempting to steal a truck that belonged to another tenant, Detective Mike Coffey said. The intruders fled from the garage on foot and Garvin followed them around a corner to the nearby intersection of Burbank and Troost, where one of them turned and fired a gun, striking Garvin, police said.
The suspects were seen by a witness escaping in a delivery van with graffiti marking the side of it.
