Dr. Thompson’s Savage Journey Into Politics

The world according to Hunter S. Thompson:
On George Bush: “He’s the only man elected President precisely because he has never accepted responsibility for anything.”
On Michael S. Dukakis: “Nature abhors a vacuum. I don’t understand how anyone can run against George Bush, and he (Bush) comes out looking like the environmentalist, the friendly, funny guy.”
On Ronald Reagan’s handling of the Iran-Contra scandal: “Reagan just assumed that we wouldn’t notice. Ha ha--we didn’t.”
On Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s presidential prospects: “Kennedy, unfortunately, a long time ago ran off a bridge.”
On his own middle initial: “Is that all you care about in this world? You came all this way for that?”
On gun control: “The truth is, I should have an assault rifle. . . . People who shoot up schools shouldn’t have assault rifles.”
On the talk circuit: “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing here in a nightclub full of drunkards.”
On lawyers-as-politicians: “When you have the same people making the laws who interpret them, you’re in a quandary.”
On life: “The dumb are always with us.”
On celebrity sobriety: “You shouldn’t sell your sins off too cheap. I’m going to wait until I get arrested before I turn to Jesus.”
