2 Alaska Sea Otters Die at Sea World, 3 Very Ill

SAN DIEGO — Two of five sea otters rescued from the oil-fouled waters of Alaska’s Prince William Sound have died at Sea World, and the prognosis is poor for the remaining three, officials said Wednesday.
“We’re not terribly optimistic,” park spokesman Dan LeBlanc said, describing the conditions of the surviving three as grave.
The otters, caught with other animals and birds in the oil spill when the tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on March 24, apparently suffered kidney and liver damage from ingesting crude oil, LeBlanc said.
