PRINCETON, Ind. — A train derailed today and hit tanks containing farm pesticides and fertilizers, releasing chemical fumes that forced evacuation of 1,300 students from nearby schools and injured one person, police said.
The train, carrying grain, ran off the tracks at 8:30 a.m. at Princeton Fertilizer. The spreading fumes forced a two-hour precautionary evacuation of Princeton Community High School and Brumfield Elementary School, less than half a mile downwind. Homes within two miles of the site were also evacuated.
An employee of an adjacent grain elevator was treated for skin and eye irritation at a hospital.
