John Gibbs relieved Kevin Nielsen in the fifth inning and went the rest of the way to improve to 2-0 as visiting San Diego State upset 14th-ranked Long Beach State, 8-5.
The Aztecs (21-13) got three RBIs from Eric Christofferson and two more from Brian Dunn. Long Beach State is now 29-7.
Point Loma Nazarene’s Scott Hurley had three hits and batted in a run as the Crusaders (17-16) defeated visiting UC San Diego, 4-2, in a nonconference game. Dion Dice was the winning pitcher (1-1), and Tom Martin picked up his fourth save. For UCSD (15-12), Jim Martinez hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning.
COLLEGE SIGNINGS
Alison Borgman of Montgomery High has accepted a scholarship to play volleyball at Weber State. Borgman, a 6-foot middle blocker, was the Aztecs’ most valuable player two years in a row and was a first-team Metro Conference selection this season. She also played for the San Diego Volleyball Club for two seasons.
