Mayor Tom Bradley and Census Bureau officials have launched an effort to encourage participation in the 1990 census in order to provide an accurate count of Los Angeles’ residents.
Bradley met with the newly created Los Angeles Correct Count Census Committee, a coalition of minority and community groups, and labor, religious and homeless leaders, to ask their help in educating the public about taking part in the census.
“We have to get started early to prepare people to get them in the mood to participate completely in the 1990 census,” Bradley said at a meeting of the committee at Los Angeles City Hall.
“Los Angeles has been undercounted by a significant amount (in previous censuses),” Bradley said. “It affects how many members of Congress you can elect, it determines how much money the city is going to receive for various programs.”
