A van went out of control and careened into a road construction site in Simi Valley on Thursday, killing a road worker.
Gary Montoya, 27, of Oxnard died at 4:10 p.m. at Simi Valley Adventist Hospital, authorities said. A southbound van driven by a paraplegic using special driving equipment crossed the center divider of Tapo Street, south of the Simi Valley Freeway, and hit Montoya, who was at the construction site operating a concrete saw, said Lt. Bob Klamser of the Simi Valley Police Department.
The driver of the van, 29-year old Mark Faubert of Simi Valley, suffered minor injuries, Klamser said.
It was not known why the van went out of control, but there were no indications that it was connected with the driver’s disability, Klamser said.
