High School Baseball : Camarillo’s Wechsburg Whips Westlake With One-Hitter, 4-3

Vaughn Wechsburg pitched a one-hitter and added a two-run single Friday as visiting Camarillo High edged Westlake, 4-3, to pull into a three-way tie for second place in the Marmonte League.

Camarillo (10-7, 3-1) has won six of its past eight games and is tied with Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, which trail Newbury Park by a game.

Wechsburg (2-3), a senior right-hander, struck out seven and walked five. Billy Lynch doubled with two out in the sixth as Camarillo scored twice to overcome a 3-2 deficit. Jason McAtee singled to score Lynch and pinch-runner A. J. Lindbloom scored on Mitch King’s single.

Mike Lieberthal singled in the third for Westlake’s only hit. The fielding woes continued for Westlake (7-9, 1-4), which committed six errors. Camarillo made five.

In other Marmonte League games:

Newbury Park 4, Channel Islands 2--Senior right-hander Jeremy Dewey threw a five-hitter and struck out six and Danny Madsen hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly to lead visiting Newbury Park over Channel Islands (5-10, 0-5). Eric Greene, Geoff Black and Shane Gallimore doubled for the Panthers (13-1-3, 4-0).

Thousand Oaks 10, Royal 6--Brian Higgins slugged two home runs and drove in seven runs to lead Thousand Oaks. Higgins, who went three for four, had a two-run single in the second, a three-run homer in the third and a two-run shot in the seventh.

Mike McNellis hit a two-run home run in the first inning for Thousand Oaks (6-5, 3-1 in league play). Senior right-hander Scott Haffner pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, striking out three, to even his record at 1-1.

James Jones hit a solo home run for Royal (7-10, 1-3).

DEL REY LEAGUE

Loyola 9, Crespi 4--Ryan Lefebvre, son of Seattle Mariners Manager Jim Lefebvre, hit two home runs, singled and scored four runs to lead the Cubs at Loyola. Lefebvre picked up the first of his five RBIs with a first-inning double. He slugged a three-run home run in the second inning as Loyola took a 6-0 lead. Lefebvre also hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.

John Dempsey, son of Dodgers catcher Rick Dempsey, drove in two runs for Crespi (5-9-2, 0-3-1) with a single in the fifth.

The victory moved Loyola (6-7, 3-1) into a first-place tie with Alemany.

St. Francis 8, St. John Bosco 5--Derek Bedell lashed a two-run single to pace a four-run fifth inning for the Golden Knights at St. John Bosco. Bedell, Gregg Zaun and Mark Loretta, who had a two-run double in the first, had three hits each. Matt Jones had two hits, stole two bases and scored three runs for St. Francis (6-4-1, 2-2).

Starter Mitch Bowen pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win and Manny Fernandez recorded his first save.

FOOTHILL LEAGUE

Hart 7, Schurr 1--Ray Gardocki went four for four with three RBIs and Lance Migita was three for four with one RBI to lead the host Indians (13-1, 4-0) to their 11th consecutive win. Keith Halcovich (4-1) pitched a four-hitter with three strikeouts.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

Hoover 5, Muir 3--George Trejo hammered a three-run home run in the first inning and Mickey Moreno was three for four with a solo home run for Hoover (9-3, 4-2). Freshman right-hander Kevin Deitch pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and three runs, two earned, to notch his second victory without a defeat.

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE

Moorpark 7, Fillmore 6--Frank Fernandez’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in Mike Zamrock with what proved to be the winning run in the Tri-Valley League game at Moorpark. Robert Hernandez (5-0) scattered eight hits and struck out four for Moorpark (9-1, 5-0).

Oak Park 12, Bishop Diego 2--Mike Benjamin hit a home run, doubled and drove in three runs to lead Oak Park (6-5, 3-2). Gary Silverman and Scott Ziegler each had three hits, and Jason Kane added two. Senior right-hander Mark Karr pitched four innings, allowing two hits and one run.

NONLEAGUE

Alemany 11, Agoura 3--Senior right-hander Tom Daniels (5-3) pitched a complete game and struck out 10 to lead Alemany (9-7). Greg Thompson and Mike Sims each had three hits to pace Alemany’s 14-hit attack. Kirk Fellows and Brian Swanson each doubled twice and Leo Tejada added a two-run home run in the third inning.

Zac Miller (0-2) allowed eight hits and seven runs in three innings to take the defeat for Agoura (5-6). Agoura’s Mark Costes went three for four with a solo home run.

Calabasas 8, Chaminade 2--Senior left-hander Dan Glassman pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight for the Coyotes, and Dave Kalman added three singles and four RBIs at Calabasas.

Cary Brous and Brett Resnick each had two hits for Calabasas (5-4-1).

Harvard 5, Arcadia 4--Jay Borenstein singled in the winning run with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth and Marty Holly had two doubles and one RBI to lead the Saracens at Harvard.

Senior right-hander Bryan Jacobsen (1-3) allowed two runs and three hits and struck out six in four innings to pick up the win.

In an earlier nonleague game Friday, John Stanton had a home run, triple and two RBIs to lead Harvard (6-8) to a 15-2 win over Buckley.

Glendale 9, Alhambra 6--Mike Thomas had two hits and two RBIs and Jon Strauss added two hits and three RBIs to lead an 11-hit attack for the host Dynamiters (7-5-1).

Beverly Hills 14, Bell-Jeff 3--Michael Moore, who has accepted a football scholarship to UCLA, hit a grand slam in the second inning to lead Beverly Hills. Mike Cesta, who had two hits, drove in two runs for Bell-Jeff (4-6), which committed six errors in an eight-run fifth inning.
