For Some, the Oscar Show Was One Big Carr Crash

Re “Allan Carr: ‘We Won the Town’ ” (April 4): Of course Mr. Carr is being defensive about his production of the Academy Awards. If I had produced such a dreadful show, I too might be defensive.
Why the academy cannot do what the British do--which is to simply present such awards with appropriate film clips and music and without inapplicable comments and time-consuming and ridiculous production numbers--is beyond me. Perhaps the American ethic of making everything better and bigger has become distorted.
