200 Demonstrate at Nevada Nuclear Test Site; 69 Arrested

MERCURY, Nev. — About 200 anti-nuclear protesters demonstrated Saturday at the entrance to the Nevada Test Site and 69 were arrested for trespassing onto the site, the Energy Department said.
Most of those arrested were issued citations and released after crossing a cattle guard marking the entrance to the site, said department spokesman Jim Boyer.
Four protesters, however, were taken to the Nye County sheriff’s office in the town of Beatty, including three people who were caught inside the test site near the government town of Mercury. The fourth protester was charged with resisting arrest at the cattle guard.
Nye County officials said earlier this week that they would no longer prosecute any trespass arrests at the test site.
Saturday’s demonstration was part of a 10-day protest organized by the American Peace Test that began Friday.
