City Statue

As a former mayor and councilman of Monterey Park (1982-86), I am saddened by the proposed removal of our 1984 Olympic sculpture (Metro, March 31). Our city hosted the field hockey event, and we took a very special American patriotic pride in our contribution to peace and understanding in this world of ours.
I have no quarrel with a statue of George Washington. The father of our country would be a welcome and important symbol to our longtime citizens as well as new immigrants. But, if used as a replacement for our Olympic sculpture, then perhaps it would be appropriate to inscribe the statue, “George Washington wept here.”
