SDSU Sweeps Doubleheader

San Diego State’s baseball team swept a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader from New Mexico, 10-3 and 11-2, Saturday in Albuquerque. The Aztecs improved to 23-13, 7-3. The Lobos fell to 7-20-1, 3-3.

SDSU’s Brian Dunn had three RBIs on a single, two triples and a home run in the first game. The second baseman could have hit for the cycle, but he stretched a double into his second triple in his final at-bat. Dunn went two for five with a double and a triple in the second game.

Rob Brown (6-4) and Dave Riddle (3-0) were the winning pitchers.

The University of San Diego lost both games of a West Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader to Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. The Lions (20-17-1, 5-1) won by scores of 10-5 and 8-0.

The second game was interrupted by a bench-clearing brawl in the first inning when USD starter Tony Battilega hit Rob Cannon with a pitch and Cannon charged the mound. Both were ejected, and USD protested the game.

USD’s Chuck Graham set a school record with his 53rd career double in the first game. Andy Asaro had 52 from 1979-82.

Azusa Pacific swept Point Loma Nazarene College (17-18, 4-8 in the Golden State Athletic Conference), 5-0 and 23-2, at Azusa Pacific (21-12, 9-3).

Cal Poly Pomona defeated U.S. International, 11-10, after the Gulls (13-26) had rallied to tie the score after trailing early, 8-0.

Starters J.J. Fisher (4-1) and Mike Morgan (4-6) picked up victories as UC San Diego swept a doubleheader from Cal State San Bernardino, 10-5 and 6-4, in La Jolla.

VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State’s Eric Etebari had 34 kills to lead the Aztecs (13-14) over Pepperdine, 7-15, 15-8, 15-7, 7-15, 15-11 in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Peterson Gym.

SOFTBALL

University of San Diego’s Lisa Ziomkowski pitched every inning and won both games of a doubleheader over Whittier, 10-3 and 5-3. USD is 17-20.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC San Diego swept its doubles matches and defeated Loyola Marymount, 6-3, in a nonconference match in La Jolla.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Point Loma Nazarene men (3-1) defeated Pomona Pitzer (4-2), 96-65. The Crusaders’ Tommy Anderberg won the javelin (157-3), the shotput (45-4) and the discus (150-9).
