Washington Ships More Apples: Shipments of Washington state apples increased slightly last week after losing ground for a month, an indication that consumers may be overcoming fears of the Alar chemical scare that began in February, an industry official said. Total out-of-state shipments last week were 1.196 million 42-pound boxes, compared to 1.191 million the previous week, said Bill Dewitt, manager of the Wenatchee Valley Traffic Assn., which tracks sales of Washington apples, the largest apple crop in the nation. For the same week last year, more than 1.4 million boxes were shipped.
