Guitarist George Benson and trumpeters Wynton Marsalis and Freddie Hubbard are among a host of jazz musicians who will play an all-night benefit tonight in New York to raise money for jazz trumpeter Woody Shaw, who lost an arm in a recent subway fall. Shaw, who was blinded by a degenerative eye disease and is in deteriorating health, tumbled from a subway platform in Brooklyn into a train’s path Feb. 27. His left arm was amputated at the elbow. “He’s a phenomenal musician,” said alto saxophonist Bobby Watson, who will also play at the benefit. “He hears a piece of music once and memorizes it.” As leader of the Woody Shaw Quintet, Shaw was voted the top jazz trumpet player of 1978 in Downbeat magazine’s poll. Shaw, 44, lives in Newark, N.J.
