Governor’s Letter
Hats off to Gov. Deukmejian for his letter. I have to admit that he has a point. Most social programs sound really favorable until you see the bill. The fact is that the ones who pay for the social programs oftentimes do not see its benefits--the middle class. I do not support an increase in government spending, be it on the federal or state level.
Every time a President or governor has spent more than he should, inflation ensues and we have a budget mess. The people of this state are fed up with taxes and will refuse to pay another cent, whether it is in the form of gasoline taxes or in confiscatory income taxes. If you, the editors of The Times, believe that more revenues are going to be necessary, then I, like our great governor, am also long awaiting your voluntary tax check.
