The head of Sweden’s security police resigned, a day before a comprehensive report on the force is due to be presented. Sune Sandstrom, head of the force known by the initials SAPO, said he decided to leave his post because he was not qualified to reorganize the force as demanded by Parliament. SAPO has been under fire after being accused of carrying out illegal eavesdropping in the hunt for the slayer of Prime Minister Olof Palme, who was shot and killed on a Stockholm street in February, 1986. Police are currently holding a 41-year-old Swede as the suspected murderer. Sweden’s ambassador to France, Carl Lidbom, has been investigating the workings of SAPO for the past year.
