Steve Ross singled home the winning run in the eighth inning for Valley College as the host Monarchs rallied for an 8-6 Western State Conference victory over Oxnard on Tuesday.
The Monarchs snapped a 6-6 tie on Ross’ single to left that scored Gene Demyon, who had singled to right. Valley added an insurance run when Gene Caruso hit E. J. Pape with a pitch with the bases loaded.
Ray Sabado’s two-run single to right keyed Valley’s three-run rally in the fifth. Sabado advanced to third on a wild pickoff attempt and scored on Pape’s single to right to give the Monarchs a 5-2 lead.
Valley and Oxnard each added a run in the sixth before Oxnard’s Tim Bohling tied the score, 6-6, with a three-run home run in the seventh.
Steve Slattery picked up the win in relief for Valley (23-6-1, 8-4 in WSC play).
