MOSCOW — Syrian helicopters fired rockets at two Soviet naval vessels in the Mediterranean, and Syria apologized for the raid that injured at least seven sailors, the Foreign Ministry said today.
The attack on the Soviet tugboat and a divers’ boat occurred Tuesday morning near the Syrian port of Tartus, spokesman Gennady I. Gerasimov said. According to an initial probe, the attack was a result of “erroneous actions of one of the Syrian helicopters,” he said.
He did not say what type of helicopters were involved or further describe the Soviet vessels.
