The American Film Institute Los Angeles International Film Festival opens today for two weeks at the Cineplex Odeon Century Plaza Cinemas. Here is today’s schedule:
‘Mignon Has Come to Stay’
Italy - France, 1988, 94 min.
8:35 p.m.
The Italian-French mix here extends from cast and crew to story to characters: a large, messy, fertile Roman family coping with the cool little upper-class Parisian teen-ager, Mignon, invading them for a summer and ravishing the heart of 13-year-old Giorgio. Also the style: a blend of the better traditions of French and Italian family comedy (with Truffaut, Renoir, Monicelli and Visconti as obvious influences). There’s a warmly humane, almost maternal glow about this picture, perhaps only coincidentally because debuting director-co-writer Francesca Archibugi was pregnant with her first child during most of the shooting; it’s a lovable film.
