LONDON — Sir John Gielgud, one of Britain’s best-loved stage and screen actors, retired as president of London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on his 85th birthday today.
Princess Diana, 27-year-old wife of the Prince of Wales, succeeds him, making her debut in the post Sunday at a charity screening of the film “City Lights” marking the 100th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin’s birth.
