Richard Rossen’s Awards

I read with dismay the April 1 letter from Robert Rossen’s widow, Sue. She claims that her husband was denied the Academy Award for best director of 1949 for “All the King’s Men” because “McCarthyism reared its ugly head.”
How can she say that when the same academy named her husband’s movie best film?
Furthermore, the New York Critics selected “All the King’s Men” best picture while choosing Carol Reed best director over Rossen. McCarthyism here too?
